Gawker Will Eat Itself

Gawker’s Already Over feature trains its world-weary gaze on its own town:

“Right now, as you read this, millions of kids around the world are thinking, I’m going to grow up and move to New York, where people will understand me. Those kids are douchebags, but, more importantly, they’re right: They will be understood by the douchebags already here. They will also be resented, backstabbed, and made fun of for their unfamiliarity with the ways of the city by people who have conveniently forgotten their own, slightly less recent, unfamiliarity. New York is, at this point, a giant recycling factory, unable to contribute anything new to the culture while proclaiming that the latest remix is actually a bold step in a new direction.”

Self-loathing is the new boosterism.

  1. Maybe it’s a form of sacrifice. “Get out while you can, I’ll stay behind to take what ever you left behind”, or, “How can I get people to not come here and get people out who are here”. Maybe it’s selfishness.

  2. Matthew,

    D….. b.. .

Now there’s a phrase for ages!

I guess what I mean is this: most people would generally agree that those who grew up in the ’80s (when this epithet was first coined and gained popular currency) were (and still are) the truly LOST generation: we grew up with that first countless millions of friends and fellows aborted outright. So, it shouldn’t be any surprise that we took to defining one another in terms that are commensurate with that sort of holocaust.

Looking for my brothers and sisters,

    JOB

  3. I worry for the readers who find “douchebag” to be the non-blue part of the piece.

  4. Douchebag was first used in the 1960’s and first said on Network TV during a SNL episode in 1980.It’s really not that “blue” considering other terms we use on a regular basis. How a douchebag and abortion can be used in the same sentence as nearly the same thing is beyond me.

  5. anonymous:

Massingill and Planned Parenthood are making the same profit off the same market.

Put another way – if a women cleans herself out, there’s really only one reason for it – get rid of what I did last night. Isn’t that the same reason women go to PP?

    JOB

  6. JOB – I would suggest you read a bit more about what douche means. If you are suggesting women only use it as a birth control method, then you are wrong in your assumption. For those women who do use it as a form of birth control it is not effective, maybe at most with a 20% success, and it can actually increase chances of birth as it can force sperm further.

Extremely doubtful that millions of births were diverted because of douching.

I applaud your hatred of abortion, I just think you chose the wrong subject matter to attack.
