Somnia

My scared waking is always a foregone conclusion.
The clock’s face, lacking my own alarm, has taunted
I told you so in stoic fashion, once again
Displaying the officious analog of a posing colon
Between stoic hour digit and defiant minute digit dead-
On as truth, a metronome counter of the ways
That time’s tune is eating into night’s sleep-starved face.

I press my dream-smudged face to a star-smeared window pane,
My scribbled limbs confused beneath a blur of bed sheets.
I feel the house through its frame of wires, vents and drains
Draw out body heat and strangle flesh. The weight strains
My sleep and consumes it with the usual night-sweats.
Balance of night and day slides toward dawn. The moon sank
Hours ago. Darkness is left with only itself to thank

For spilling oblivion into time, frozen
By the Frigidaire as its door opens a crack
Of light on a desperate kitchen expedition –
The hungry clock continues its concerto of col-on,
Col-on, col
– On and on… Sequential blue matchheads struck
Against the capacious darkness of a warehouse
Where abridged dreams are stored by the hour in crates of emptiness.

Nice rejoinder to my rejoinder. I like it. And I like how Korrektiv is becoming the Harlem Globetrotters of the Catholic blogosphere.

  2. Meadowlark,

It was more of an envoi to yours – as I'd written the thing (with modest revisions since) some years back.

    I like yours better, though.

It does more with less – ever the challenge of the poet.

Rufus – you know it's only a matter of time before I spring a redesign and try to monetize. I'm weak that way.

I'm all for it! I've been thinking about proposing we all chip in on a redesign. It seems to me a little web design could go a long way here.

    I know a guy.

    OWWW, OWWW (holding arm) OWWW.

    MY LEGGG.

Count one more as up for redesign and will kick in my share.

  8. Ditto.

  9. Matthew Lickona says

Well, I gotta know what's wanted before I can go to my guy…

Maybe start with the dance-of-death K and work from there. Remember the New Pantagruel?

I do remember New Pantagruel, but it's too static and had that dumb forum section like Godspy did. Too static.

Some of the guys from New P, are doing Front Porch. I like the look of that site.

Before you all chip in for a redesign really hash out what you want to do.

I like podcasting. I think you have some pretty special talent on the team. Both Matthew and JOB have great speaking voices, until Matt's upstate trickles in every now and then. That can be suppressed with practice. Rufonius, didn't you DJ for awhile?

It it were me, I'd go Zen. No fru-fru. Just words on a white background. Pure communication. Eliminate as many distractions as possible. Falling asleep.
