A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

To borrow a phrase from Webb, here’s a cut of Pope Francis’ jib:

JOB
(Poor) Translation:
ROME, Wednesday, September 2, 2009 ( ZENIT.org ) – Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Archbishop of Buenos Aires and Primate of Argentina, was invited to defend human life from its conception until its natural end, on the occasion of the feast of St. Raimondo Nonnato invoked by pregnant women, those who wish to become pregnant or who are experiencing a difficult pregnancy.
This was reported L’Osservatore Romano in its edition of September 2. On this occasion, the cardinal celebrated Mass with the “messengers of life” – those who are committed to spreading a culture of life in homes by distributing images of St. Raimondo Nonnato – gathered for a meeting on the theme “United Jesus, we remain in love. ”
In his homily, Cardinal Bergoglio urged these “messengers” to testify personally love for life in the battle against the “culture of death.” And encouraged them to defend life from conception to its natural end.
But really promote the culture of life means also support the existence of these unborn children, in all phases of their childhood, L’Osservatore Romano reported yet. Must ensure that “children grow up healthily, are adequately fed, get a good education based on sound moral principles,” the cardinal added.
For the prelate, each child must be “accompanied for life” even in “pain, in sickness, in hospitals clean” where staff attend scrupulously young patients with tenderness. This is the “culture of life” sustained so many times by John Paul II and now Benedict XVI.
“This is a battle to sustain against the many attacks on human life, against the dissemination of the culture of death.” A battle that must be supported also for the elderly, who are the “wisdom of life”, and when human life is near extinction. This, of course, requires sacrifice and devotion, continued the Primate of Argentina stating that if “life is beautiful” can not be provided “to eliminate the difficulties.”
“We can not embrace the culture of life if we do not put our roots in Jesus, if we are not united to Him as a branch to the trunk of the vine,” he said. “Because Jesus is the boss of life. It is defined as the way, the truth and the life. It is only Jesus that we can spread this ardor, that we can have this fervor to proclaim the message of life. ”

incendiary thought: JPII was the pope called out of a country oppressed by communism. Francis I called out of a country oppressed by capitalism?

Both of these books should be required reading for the 21st century.

One takes the Good Samaritan and the other the Prodigal Son as an ideal economic model. I expect Pope Francis would concur…
JOB
Those look great! Going on my reading list…
wait…. is the white pope the guy on the strings or the guy holding the strings? if they guy holding, what’s on the strings? if on the strings, is the guy holding them the black pope? if so, why the secretive suspense-creating silhouette?
to put it another way, thank you for speaking the unspeakable terror. not that I think Jesuits are Masons. but i don’t yet dare to pray that this pope will turn up the heat of the fire B16 started when he called out the faithlessness of the modern day society of jesus.
Yeah, I think the guy holding the strings is supposed to be the Black Pope. He’s rendered in silhouette in the second image because he’s so heavily backlit by infernal hellfire. The effect isn’t to create suspense as to what his identity might be, it’s to manifest the true operator, Lucifer.
At least they finally eliminated the middleman puppeteer. A sign that the Vatican is finally streamlining its operation.
Aw, I love ecumenism in action.
All the more reason to love the man (Pope Francis–EEEEEEEEEEEEE! That’s me screaming with delight!–not Chick).
I always thought there was something very interesting about Chick’s artwork. I wonder if there will be art shows displaying his stuff in fifty years.
It….is…..bizarre.
I, for one, welcome our new Ignatian overlord.
