First Dolores—Now Echo. Who’s Heart Is Not Being Broken?

Hibbing native Echo Helstrom Casey, Bob Dylan’s first serious girlfriend and widely viewed as the inspiration for his 1963 song “Girl From the North Country,” died this month in California. She was 75.

      To be honest with you, I always thought it was a traditional tune that he spruced up to his style. I had no idea it was original Dylan. I fell in love with it on Freewheelin’ – but I’ll have to spend more time with the Dylan-cum-Cash version to say which way the wind blows…
