Roger Ebert and the Catholic Church

Catholic film critic Steven Greydanaus has written a fine essay and appreciation of Roger Ebert.

Ebert: “I consider myself Catholic, lock, stock and barrel, with this technical loophole: I cannot believe in God.”

Now all the other movie critics move up a space.

    How does it feel, Lickona?

    • Matthew Lickona says:

Oh, just ducky. Considering that “up a space” refers to the line toward Obsolescence Overlook.

  2. That was fantastic, Mr. El Pot.

Ebert’s writing recalls the best of Lickona.

    I have hope for him.

  3. That is a great article.

From one of my favorite Ebert reviews:

“I had a colonoscopy once, and they let me watch it on TV. It was more entertaining than The Brown Bunny.

When the movie’s director responded by mocking Ebert’s weight, Ebert said, “It is true that I am fat, but one day I will be thin, and he will still be the director of The Brown Bunny.”

  5. Interesting piece in First Things too–apparently he was pro-life, and said so last month.
