Don’t look now, but First Son makes electronica.
Artist’s notes: “It’s late, I’m tired, and this track sucks. [Aw, he takes after his old man.] I started out mixing a good kick, which I think I did pretty well, but the rest of the track eventually went to hell, mainly because I used too much reverb on everything. Well, I forced myself to finish it and post it for completion’s sake. It’s kind of Trance-y, which is what I was going for (my favorite subgenre of Electronica), with a signature Super Saw Lead and pulsating bass line. Again, I THINK this is Trance; to me, it sounds like Trance. If any expert wishes to refute that, then, be my guest.”
BONUS TRACK: Apparently, the kids these days like this thing called Dubstep…
Artist’s notes: “So, yeah, This isn’t that great a track. I’m still an amateur. But it is one of my better ones, and I thought, ‘Hell, this is good enough to at least put on youtube.’ I THINK it’s dubstep, according to the original definition of the genre, but I don’t pretend to be an expert. Criticism and hatin’ are all okay and encouraged. At least it’s feedback, and that’s kind of the only way I’m gonna get better. As for the name of the track, well, No lyrics, so I could title it anything and it would sound kind of stupid.”
The Lickonas really are too cool for school. I’m so impressed.
Mixology runs in the family!
Aw, you. And unlike certain other Lickonas I could name, he actually finishes things!
“for completion’s sake.”
Genius homeschool kids, enough already!
The 2nd one is seriously excellent for any age.
Thanks.

What has more layers than a turduckin?
My compliments come cheap but it sounds cool.
You’ll have to make sure when he’s famous that he doesn’t fall for his own hype! 😉
Forget the turducken; the goose is cooked.
For a moment, I thought you meant “the second [child] is probably better than the first.” Being a second child myself, I was nodding in agreement.
But this is hot stuff. Would he be willing to provide the soundtrack for Team Korrektiv’s entry in next year’s 50 Hour Slam?
when he becomes the next avicii make sure he doesn’t agree to do boost an aging songstress’s career for no good reason (madonna). Yeah I love the electro-house genre and some dubstep.
First track sounds good, but the lead-in bass beat was kind of obvious. I’d make it more minimal in the beginning, so it gets more appreciation after the drop. Keep it up!
Track 2… dope. Just curious, have you heard of Adventure Club, a dubstep outfit out of canada? I happen to enjoy all of their tracks; can’t say that for all the producers out there.
Thanks, all for the kind words. Paul, he’ll be grateful for the feedback, and will surely check out Adventure Club. I keep telling him to do an electro-house version of “Moves Like Jagger” where he sings about getting a “Kick like Skrillex.” Because I’m old, you see, and he’s always complaining about how he can’t get a kick like Skrillex.
Potter, he’s already done music for a video game app. He’s a pro. But his rates are super cheap. He might even cut me a deal. We go way back.
I don’t even understand the words that are being used. Dub what now?
OLD.
Does he have any formal musical training? Or is he just sort of noodling around? And what do you use to make electronica?
Very little formal training, but he’s learning a good deal of theory as he goes. He uses a laptop to make the music.
Not even a keyboard, the kind with black-and-white keys? Wow.
Cool.
Have to brag on my eldest daughter(11). She created an old-school techno piece on Garage Band. Even made a cool album cover and came up with an awesome title, “Oh my Stars and Garters!” I’ll see if I can use my sub-par skillz to post it. Glad to see other kids are taking up modern methods of music-making. They DON’T teach that in school, indeed. Keep up the extremely avant garde parenting!
“Oh my stars and garters!”
Good for your daughter! Please do post! First Son did an awful lot of work on garage band, but has since moved on to Logic. I can’t take much credit, since Dad likes Dad rock.
I’m old, too, but dubstep is a thing for the moment.
Love the link. I’ll be sure to show her. Dad would be pleased about the comix reference. I keep telling him he needs to find a way to collaborate with y’all. He is itching to make some Catholic Pop Art!
P.S. I enjoyed the first piece much more. I’m old and not sure about dubstep, yet.
Matthew, you should have him compose a tune for a certain set of verses. I’m ready for my Autotuning, Mr. DeMille.
I’m pretty sure he needs to live a little longer for that particular set of verses.
