A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

I’m sensing irony in this post, maybe implying that this is an ominous cultural event. What you may not realize is that this can be a very hazardous device when operated by untrained personnel. Northeastern is obviously concerned about public safety, and while the professor may have acted in a manner which was insensitive to some members of the class, the overall intent was positive and should be respected.
Webb! If the very hazardous device is irony, Potter is well-schooled and he’s skilled, if those poems and Percy papers are any indication. As for proficiency on the fucksaw, he’ll have to answer that for himself.
I wonder if they passed out goggles and smocks at the event, like Gallagher’s old Sledge-O-Matic routine.
The Awl had a kind of fascinating piece on this a while back. Also fascinating: the comments afterwards, including some of the linked stories. It’s a funny old world.
You guys are the freaking limit.
Thanks to you both.
To all I mean.
And to think it all started with that nice old man William Burroughs…
JOB
And then there was that nice old woman Dr. Ruth.
I like the student who was quoted in defense of the demo as saying that, far from being offended, some of those in attendance were even trying to move to the front of the class for a closer look.
Back at the old alma mater, SFSU (no relation to an academic institution), Human Sexuality was a SENIOR requirement. I remember a five minute movie with well lubricated hippies copulating wildly.
Dad paid tuition!
“To be pagan it would be one thing, an easement taken easily in a rosy old pagan world; to be Christian it would be another thing, fornication forbidden and not even to be thought of in the new life, and I can see that it need not be thought of if there were such a life. But to be neither pagan nor Christian but this: oh this is a sickness, Rory. For it to be longed after and dreamed of the first twenty years of one’s life, not practiced but not quite prohibited; simply longed after, longed after as a fruit not really forbidden but mock-forbidden and therefore secretly prized, prized first last and always by the cult of the naughty nice wherein everyone is nicer than Christians and naughtier than pagans, wherein there are dreamed not one but two American dreams: of Ozzie and Harriet, nicer-than-Christian folks, and of Tillie and Mac and belly to back.” — Walker Percy, The Moviegoer
Totally classic Percy. Just ask Walker.
Thanks Jonathan.
