From the YouTube Music Video Archives: Luimen by Elliot Carter

The composer Elliot Carter turned 100 years old today. There are a number of fine performances on YouTube, including a cello sonata and a piece for flute and cello called Enchanted Preludes. The one I really enjoyed was this sextet made up of a guitar, a mandolin, a harp, vibes, a trombone, and a trumpet. Luimen is apparently Dutch for “whimsical moods”. If you watch it through to the end, you’ll see Carter himself stand for the applause – looking quite whimsical. This was recorded just this last July at Tanglewood, and the composer looks as if he could go another couple of decades.
