Those Whom The Gods Wish To Destroy, They Record.

Oh, this just keeps getting richer. The good people at Catholic Radio International went and interviewed me about the whole Young Jesus-Eater thing. The chat opens with me stumbling through some thoughts on Catholic fiction, God help me. (Didn’t see that coming.) But I had fun all the same, and the soothing tones should make the perfect antidote to the stress of your evening commute! And yeah, I’m working on a graphic novel.

  1. Maybe I should commission you for my budding graphic novel idea of technological takeover of the human race based on the book of Judges.

    Thirty-six minutes? Sheesh, that’s brutal.

I’m afraid I’m probably not your man, M. Swaim. I mean, I’m hiring an artist for my own project…

  3. I thought you did very well with the interview! And a graphic novel? That’s rad in itself AND a sure-fire way to guarantee that your boys will hero-worship you forever and ever.

Why thank you, Smokee. Yeah, the graphic novel should score me some points with the soon-to-be-sullens… I just have to get the thing actually made…

Great interview, Matthew. Nicely sprinkled with pithy Catholic quotations, too – impressive! I’m looking forward to whatever you write next, but a graphic novel? That I definitely would love to see.

  6. Matthew Lickona says

Thanks, J. I hope you’re right about the graphic novel thing…

nice interview Matt. I like the part about the children. Giving them a childhood. We are trying to keep ours innocent as long as possible.

I like when the discussion turned to despair. You discussed the Catholic ghetto. It would have been interesting to discuss the overriding sense of despair that is infused in the Catholic ghetto. You seemed to romanticize it a bit. I see it as a place to escape from, not as a place of support. Any comment?

Thanks, CM. I’m sorry if it sounded like I was romanticizing the ghetto. I do think there’s a certain cultural value in communal belief, but I’m happy to admit that I have no first hand experience, and am happy to be taught on this point.

Yes there is cultural value. There is communal belief. There is also communal despair, communal hatred, communal violence, communal ignorance, communal superstition, communal (your pick).

There are positive aspects to the Catholic ghetto. That which does not kill us makes us stronger. It is a tribal place more than a community. Faith seems to be more akin to superstition than the gentle companion that informs our hope.

On the other hand, if one can get past the negative, and not be consumed by despair, that person could obtain heaven in the coil.

As I was listening to your discussion I thought the Catholic Ghetto would be a good topic for a novel.

Good luck on the graphic novel.
