The Rumours Are True

Most likely. Given Abu Gharib.

I’ve also heard that Marines have handed out porn to recruit locals against insurgents.

Hugh Hefner rules the world. Or rather, the monster he created–namely, mainstreamed, ubiquitous porn–rules the world.

UPDATE: More photos of Abu Gharib will soon be released.

  1. Interesting. I wonder how much we can conclude from a handful of GIs out there. Also, I wonder if we need to discount this story as evidence of pornification, given the enormous stress of the battlefield (and its tendency to bring out of people things they never expected – both good and bad).

If you haven’t read it already, you should pick up Generation Kill, written by a Rolling Stone reporter who was imbedded in a platoon that was a part of the initial Iraq invasion.

  2. I’m guessing I’m quite a bit older than you… I’m a WWII vet! “Porn” as you define it was, and still is, “porn”. Back then Betty Grable, Veronia Lake, was “porn”, we GI’s also had handed out to us “girlie paperbacks”, meant to keep us GI’s from “wandering”, but we also got condoms. A pal of mine was in “special ops” and it was common to use against prisoners (this was in Italy and Germany as I recall), that we American’s would not protect their families against the Russian’s from raping their wive’s, daughter’s and sister’s, if we did not get the information we needed. I frankly, am glad I was not part of that!
Was that right or wrong? Did we win the War?

Playboy magazine did not invent porn! There were ton’s of publications and films out there already. There was plenty of it to go around and there were many people making ton’s of money doing it. Hefner came at the right time. After we GI’s came home, settled into a family life, Playboy was packaged just right for our generation!

I’m familiar with Generation Kill. I got this tidbit with an interview with the author. Check it.

To Old Enough: I very much appreciated your comment. I also want to clarify that I don’t think HH invented porn. His “genius” was selling it as “respectable.”

  4. My father is still an active duty pilot in the Army, and I’m living with my family on a military base while finishing up some post-college training, and I can tell you that porn is definitely pretty prevalent among many soldiers, especially the young, enlisted guys.

On the other hand, I can also tell you about a friend of mine who was the officer-in-charge of the tent he stayed in in Iraq, and when he made it clear to his men that no porn would be tolerated in his tent, they grumbled at first, but later accepted his policy (and appreciated his willingness to defend them from other officers who would try to use their rank unfairly.)

The American military tends to have more conservative values and integrity than society-at-large, but as the values of the society from which the military draws its members go down, so does the quality of those in the military.

  5. Mark, thanks for the link. Great interview.

  6. “We are divided in the face of a Mohammedan world, divided in every way — divided by separate independent national rivalries, by the warring interests of possessors and dispossessed — and that division cannot be remedied because the cement which once held our civilization together, the Christian cement, has crumbled.”

    Hilaire Belloc

    Mark,

If the rumours are true…It doesn’t matter, really. Robert Kaplan’s new book, “Imperial Grunts,” shows another side of the fighting man – self control, moral standards, character, etc.

It’s the way of the media more than of the U.S. soldier to fill our minds with images of these guys as a bunch of gun-happy perverts.

By the way, Machiavellian as it sounds, I’d like to add that if the U.S. Government can’t see this fight against Muslims as a war between Christianity and Islam (albeit corrupt Christianty and Islam in its purest, MOST ORTHODOX state), I think the best we can hope for is to allow that corruption to seep into Islam countries. History has shown that Islam has only ever been heeled by luxury and decadence (The riches of western India, case in point, blunted Islam’s march east) and superior firepower. Guess which one the U.S. WON’T be using anytime soon? Does this mean that the ends justifying the means? Perhaps. But that’s secularism for you. I’d like to think they are the useful idiots keeping my daughters out of burkas….

By the way, anyone else got any better ideas on how to stop the prayer rugs from coming West? I don’t think we’re gonna get ’em with military force – and for certain we can only contain them so long with Hugh Hefner. We need to throw the greenies out (maybe send them to Iran or Syria!) and start drilling in Alaska. That would certainly be a start…. At any rate, as soon as the oil money begins drying up, the blood Muslims shed will too.

And no, dialogue will not be part of the solution – unless by that we mean to kill the muslims with laughter….

    Crusading,

    JOB

p.s. Lest you all think I’m a bloodthirsty boor, I recommend you read a great book on the subject of how nasty Islam is – “Sword of the Prophet” by Serge Trifkovic. He’s not disinterested, for sure (being Serbian, he’s seen his share of blood), but his facts are all in a row.

Here’s a taste of what he unearths about the so-called “religion of peace”:

The Koran sanctions pillage, looting, ransom, and the rape of captive women as an incentive to join in jihad or “holy war”

Mohammed kept one-fifth of all spoils of war for himself

The Koran allows a man to have up to four wives — at any one time. He can divorce a wife by simply saying so 3 times

Mohammad had as many as 25 wives. One was six when they married; he was 54. He consummated the marriage when she was 9

At least 27 people were murdered on Mohammed’s orders

Mohammed allowed temporary marriage “for three nights” or more, so that soldiers in the field could “marry” prostitutes

The Koran assures the Muslim the right to own slaves by purchasing them or as a bounty of war. Mohammad had dozens

Almsgiving and mercy is commended in Islam — but the beneficiaries have to be Muslims only

In Islam, the definition of what is “right” or “just” is not fixed, but changeable by divine decree — enabling the most henous sins and crimes to be declared “the will of Allah”

The joys and glories of the Islamic “paradise” are tangible and sensual and include sex with virgins — and young boys

As Mohammad progressed from visionary and teacher to warlord and ruler, his style and message became more depraved, violent and intolerant. It is these later “revelations” that are considered definitive by Islamic authorities when they conflict with earlier ones often cited for Western consumption

The Crusades were a belated military response to three centuries of Muslim aggression against Christian lands and peoples

Islam divides the world into the House of Islam (where Islam rules) and the House of War (where it doesn’t). The two are permanently at war; there may be temporary truces, but peace will come only upon the completion of global conquest

When Muslims are a minority community, the Koran permits them to adopt a peaceful attitude to deceive their neighbors, until they feel strong enough to dispense with the pretense

The massacres perpetrated by Muslims in India are unparalleled in history, bigger in sheer numbers than the Holocaust

Muslim persecution of Christians has caused suffering and death for millions over 13 centuries — and continues today

The myth of Islam’s “tolerance” of religious minorities contradicts its teaching, history, and present reality

Islam’s “golden age” was parasitic on the Christian cultures and peoples it conquered, and ended when it “killed the host”

In 1993, Saudi Arabia’s supreme religious authority declared that the world is flat, and that anyone who disagrees is an infidel to be punished

Like Communism, Islam cannot foster prosperity, and is always reliant on plunder or unearned wealth (e.g., from oil)

Islam recognizes no distinction between temporal and divine authority; the only “legitimate” government is a theocracy

America’s “ally” Saudi Arabia remains the most intolerant Islamic regime in the world, where the practice of any religion besides Islam is as strictly prohibited as in Mohammed’s day

The first imam to deliver a Muslim prayer for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1991, declared in 1997 that Muslims will eventually elect the president and replace the constitutional government with an Islamic caliphate

Soo….It’s either Hugh Hefner and pulling the cork out of the Anwar reserve now or Mohammad’s children later….

  7. Mark Lickona says:

Maybe it’s just a matter or all society going downhill. Or maybe there’s something about our military that makes it esp. vulnerable to porn (even in peacetime). I don’t know if it would be prudent to inaugurate this debate, though.

But I will say that I don’t think handing porn out to locals is something that comes from “stress,” but rather from slight regard for the humanity of the Iraqis (I think that GK and the interview with the author testify to this), treating porn like rations, or both.
