A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

Many of my co-workers are trying to stand up for principle on the abortion issue by voting against their interests as union workers. I call the GOP the party that is always willing to stand up and lose a fight for morality (the Terri Schiavo case, for example), and if you believe these fights aren’t staged, then you must really enjoy pro wrestling. But this 32-year charade about Roe vs. Wade is the ultimate word on how a political party can win by always losing.
I still can’t get Terri Schiavo out of my mind and never will. I can’t believe our country allowed starving an innocent woman to death, while the governor of Florida and the president of the United States hid behind the courts.
I hope that future generations and future lawyers will cite Schiavo. At least they’ll see that in our generation, the courts stood up to tests against freedom.
What Judge Greer did, and what judges in general do, is they look to the law, they look for guidance in the law, and they come up with the best answers they can within the law.
In truth, the judge’s decision should not have stood, and the remedy should have (and could have) come from the Legislature and governor of the state of Florida.
If there truly were a culture of life in America, you’d see the same people who rallied around Schiavo’s parents railing against the gun lobby, which has given more than $17 million to federal candidates in the last 16 years. During that same period gun control advocates gave just $1.7 million to federal candidates.
