Exchange (for FOK Paul)

[Neko Case’s “Middle Cyclone” playing on car stereo.]

Eldest Daughter: You know, I think Neko Case is the Catwoman of music.

Me: So then who’s Batman?

Eldest Daughter: Duh! Tom Waits of course!

  1. So whats the definitive way to be introduced to Waits? I saw him in Seven Psychopaths and I want to know more…

    • Ease yourself in with a few sips of federally bonded Tom Waits in Closing Time. Then take your first drink of Everclear Tom Waits with Heart of Saturday Night. Have yourself a chronic rum and rye hangover with Small Change. Drifting a bit more, have that first drink of the day, a bourbon and soda and a red beer chaser, with Heart Attack and Vine. There really is nothing else like that one. And when you’re feeling good and brave, take a champagne and stump-water bath with Swordfish Trombones. That’s his hinge album. Everything after that is well… you’ll see.

      JOB

  2. JOB is wise in his way. But you could also just dive right into Glitter and Doom.

  3. Angelico Nguyen, Esq., OP says

Looks like Paul is the same kind of bad as we!

  4. I’ve got Waits’ 1978 Austin City Limits performance on VHS. Most of it is up on YouTube. I’m really hoping he goes there again before he’s done, and that something can be done in the way of getting tickets.

  5. Gotta hand it to you guys. Turned me on to Bob, VW, and now Waits. Suppose I’ll look into Case eventually as well. It’s inevitable if I keep hanging around here I guess.

  6. So who’s Robin? Chuck E. Weiss?

  7. Jonathan Webb says

    Waits is Alfred.

  8. Oh my! One little hesitant insight has gone much farther than I could have foreseen…..

    So who’s The Penguin?

  9. I need Zevon to be part of this. Scarecrow, with straw hair circa Animated Series. (where it all began for me)

  10. Angelico Nguyen, Esq., OP says

    Forrest Whitaker as Théoden.

    • And Ronald Reagan as Han Solo and Van Johnson as Luke!

And Peter Cushing playing himself playing Grand Moff Tarkin!

Would you believe that, earlier today, I was imagining a 1930s or early ’40s Star Wars serial, built around Duke Ellington as Lando Calrissian? It’s true!

Cushing as Tarkin? That could work, but I’m picturing Erich von Stroheim. Oh well, maybe he could be the Emperor instead.

        Boris Karloff as Darth Vader?

        Maureen O’Sullivan as Princess Leia?

Sidney Greenstreet as Jabba the Hutt, natch.
