Alice McDermott quotes O’Connor on the dangers of glibness when treating religion, then goes on to say some very fine things. Her remarks begin at around the 9:30 mark.

    I found the Elie piece profoundly depressing. Not that the Church is without problems but the total lack of self-introspection is…haunting, if you want to resurrect that “haunted” language.

    Then again, if you’ve made firm decisions that this is not what you believe, then leaving is honest.
