A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

I don’t think it’s for me to comment on the retirement of the Pope, since I am not a Catholic; or anything theological. However, I wondered if anybody here remembered a film called The Cardinal before the 1963 film by Otto Preminger and after the 1936 version? I watched it on television in the late 1960s, but thought it was in black and white. I had thought it was based on a novel by Pearl S Buck, but may be remembering The Good Earth, which I watched at around the same time.
I never saw The Cardinal, but I did read The Good Earth.
It’s OK for non-Catholics to comment on the Pope’s clothes and accent.
The “cake that is passed around” is a twinkie. Nice touch.
