All Dominican Saints

There’s All Saints’ Day, and then there’s All Dominican Saints’ Day.

Take a gander at the Litany of Saints and Blesseds of the Order of Preachers, and you can see why.

(And note the invocation of St Dominic’s contemporary and fellow reformer, St Francis of Assisi, as ‘Holy Father Francis’.)

  1. …and which one are you in the picture?

Objection: Assumes facts not in evidence.

(But thanks all the same. I do want to be in that number!)

      • Amen. Me too. Just as a friend of Dominicans, though.

The Dominicans, Franciscans, and Jesuits each have students at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley. According to one Franciscan there, when the students of the respective orders get together for parties, the Franciscans are laid-back and chilled-out; the Jesuits are (crazy-tinged) fun; and the Dominicans are just boring.

What I’m trying to say is, you show yourself to be a person of refined tastes.

  2. Speaking of which, I hear Puerto Rico may become a state soon.

I think the Dominican Order has about 3 or 4 centuries’ dibs on the adjective ‘Dominican’. But no one ever asked me, darn ’em.

It also burns me up that, for the past 130 years or so, we haven’t been able to refer to, e.g., St Albert the Great, O.P., as a ‘Christian scientist’.
