Bob Dylan has a new album coming out in September, and he’s going on tour! Potter told me, and so I told my friend, who said, “What about the Pixies? I wish they would go on tour again. Do you remember the Pixies?”
Oh yes, I remember the Pixies …

A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

I think you misheard me. What I said was, “What about Tom Waits? I wish he would go on tour. Do you remember Tom Waits?”
Ah, yes, I remember Tom Waits. I’m looking forward to his next tour, too, when perhaps he will perform “Rain Dogs” in its entirety. Or “Bad As Me” … I’m flexible. Or “Bone Machine” …
Here’s a question for our resident Waits scholar (you): what connection, if any, is there between Tom Waits’ “Bone Machine” (with perhaps the loveliest song in the Waits oeuvre, A Little Rain), and the Pixies’ “Bone Machine” (on their first album, “Surfer Rosa”?

I like the early Waits best:
I’d be down for either Tom Waits or the Pixies.
Me too! But I got my Dylan tickets today, and I’m happy with that. Really, really happy.
