It’s the birthday of novelist Muriel Spark (books by this author), born in Edinburgh, Scotland (1918). When she was growing up, she wrote love letters to herself, signed them with men’s names, and hid them in the sofa cushions in the hope of shocking her mother.
She was a prolific novelist. She’s best known for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1961). Her last novel, The Finishing School (2004), was published when she was 86 years old. She died in 2006.
A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

Sometimes I think you’re stirring things up, but I trust you know what you’re doing.
A few times in the last year or so I’ve written short emails to myself, either to remind me to do something, or in the, some might think deluded, belief that my American friends are reading.
I did keep a diary for a week when I was nine. Either when we first found the kitten or when the owners came for it. Another week later, I read it and was mortified. I haven’t written to myself since.
It’s more fun with a healthy dose of short term memory loss.
You may find yourself living in a YMCA.
You may find yourself on a Civil War battlefield.
You may find yourself behind the wheel of a large Trav-L-Aire.
You may find yourself marrying a wife and living a life.
And you may ask yourself, “Jesus, is this it?”

And I’m a show off, especially when I haven’t had enough sleep.
