I have been reading Choire Sicha for a long time now – first at Gawker, then at the New York Observer, then at Gawker again, sometimes in the Los Angeles Times, and now at The Awl. It’s an impressive run, and he’s done it, it sounds like, on his own terms. But until today, I never knew how he broke into the business:
“So how did you decide to become a writer?
The first writing job I ever got was Gawker. I sort of got to know Nick [Denton, Gawker’s founder] online. And he hired me to start their porn site, actually. Unlike a lot of people in that field, he was willing to take risks, willing to hire someone who never worked in the field before. And for that I’m grateful.”
