Debra is the last song on Beck’s 1999 album Midnight Vultures; I first heard it when it came with a computer or a phone I bought about five years ago. It’s a good song, with a couple of great falsetto verses reminiscent of Prince or Frank Valli, and a spoken word section that brings to mind an eighth-grader trying to imitate Barry White. A very talented eight grader. This live version is awesome – Beck and his band have a lot of energy, even when the whole thing turns into parody. And Beck looks great in a white suit with the ascot – the Tom Wolfe of rock and roll.
I met you at JC Penney / I think your nametag said Jenny / I coldstep to you with a fresh pack of gum / Somehow i knew you were lookin’ for some / Like a fruit that’s ripe for a pickin’ / I wouldn’t do you like that Zankou Chicken …
I was thinking about getting him to do the Korrektiv theme song.
Nah – you sound great. But you might like Peaches 'n Cream
Flanner O'Connor-ish:
You look good in that sweater
And that aluminum crutch
I'm gonna let you down easy
I've got a delicate touch.
Nice. I recall Dylan saying he was thinking about putting out a Beck-like album at one point. This was before he put out all the great shit he has put out of late. So I guess he thought better of it.
It's very good, thanks for posting, I've never heard him.
Peaches and Cream is less melodic.
You're a bit of a tease, aren't you?
