The willows that we planted, nine in all,
Lined up along the fence in our back yard,
Began to grow from saplings thin and small
To tower over rooftops — long and hard.
The leaves would shimmer in the summer sun,
Providing shade and intricate designs
Of leaf and light and bending branch for one
Suspended moment in a world of pines.
Those years they grew amazed the passersby
And made that yard unfurl like angels’ hair
Gold and green against the blue sky,
The neighborhood surrounding it with care.
The willows are our years now numbered nine.
Our love has roots that drink from Cana’s wine.
