Ernie and I feel the power of the dark side of the Force.
Ernie and I feel the power of the dark side of the Force.
A nod to Kierkegaard and Walker Percy: existentialist tomfoolery, political satire, literary homage, word mongering, a year-round summer reading club, Dylanesque music bits, apocalyptic marianism, poetry, fiction, meta-porn, a prisoner work-release program.

Your analysis is spot-on. Ernie’s comments (and his father’s) are a bit strong, but I understand the argument.
The Force is a lot like God repackaged without that troublesome Jesus guy. Some of the comments hinted at this; it’s an impersonal force. The question is, why do so many people have a problem with a personal God? Speaking as a convert, the stumbling block is real. The reasons are probably complex, but they boil down to a sense that Jesus isn’t real, or if he is, then he can’t possibly be God. Walking on water, multiplying loaves… It all seems like myth, and one myth is as good as another. This is the mindset, I think. It’s much easier to believe in a cosmic force, a transcendent Other, than a God who enters history. Father and Holy Spirit – those are cool, they’re kinda like the Force. But a specific person from a specific place and a specific time? Nah.
i find it difficult not to just skip right over the reviews and go straight to the comments. and i am feeling scared right out of the catholic church because you were harsh on star wars……mcm
MCM,
We’ll miss you bunches.
Matthew is to Star Wars as Thomas Merton is to Zen Buddhism. In this review anyway. I like how you just forge forth right past Ernie’s road blocks. Just like Merton and the abbot.
