From The YouTube Music Video Archives: Jimi Hendrix

It was the birthday of Jimi Hendrix earlier this week. Hendrix was a great songwriter, will likely always be the greatest guitarist who ever lived, and a beautiful, beautiful person most of all. If you have any reason to doubt the first claim, please listen to this performance of Little Wing. The video is pretty awful, but the improvised solo with which he ends the song is a masterpiece all its own. If you have any doubts about the second claim, listen to his version of All Along The Watchtower, with a very fine homemade video to go along with it. If you have any doubts about the last claim, please watch this interview with Dick Cavett. One of the best lines (not included here) was when Cavett asked him something like, How does it feel to be the best guitar player in the world? To which Jimi replies, No, no … what about the best guitar player in the room … I mean, what about in this chair …

Here also is a mind blowing performance of Voodoo Chile (where he picks out notes with his mouth), an acoustic Hear My Train A-Comin’, and an instrumental version Bold as Love, as well as the classic original.

Anger he smiles, towering in shiny metallic purple armour / Queen jealousy, envy waits behind him / Her fiery green gown sneers at the grassy ground / Blue are the life-giving waters taken for granted, / They quietly understand / Once happy turquoise armies lay opposite ready, / But wonder why the fight is on / But they’re all bold as love, yes, they’re all bold as love / Yeah, they’re all bold as love / Just ask the axis …
