American Catholicism

Damon Linker and Ross Douthat debate the nature of Catholicism in America over at The New Republic.

Here’s the blurb describing the two contestants: “Damon Linker is the former editor of First Things and author of The Theocons: Secular America Under Siege. Ross Douthat is an associate editor at the Atlantic Monthly and the author of Privilege: Harvard and the Education of the Ruling Class. Douthat has also written for First Things.”

In this debate, Linker continues to inveigh against the Theocons, arguing that they were led too quickly and easily into the Iraq war, and Douthat questions whether Linker’s argument doesn’t tap into some good ol’ Catholic bashing in order to make his points. I’m in the middle of it now, and will hopefully be able to finish it later on tonight. Right after I get through the rest of Potter’s Percy paper over at the Supple Mental. Incidentally, I found the New Republic piece through Gideon’s Blog, which (if I haven’t mentioned this before) is one of the finer blogs out there. In my humble opinion.
