Rudolph and Reality

The number one holiday DVD most requested by my two-year-old is Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. When I watch it with her (going on a dozen or more times now, probably) I’m struck by how real the visual space and characters seem as compared with, say, Pixar stuff or even parts of something like The Lord of the Rings. Visually, I believe the Abominable Snowmonster exists but I don’t believe Gollum does. Maybe it’s because the Rudolph space and the characters that inhabit it really are real with a physical reality that eludes representation via digitally-created space.
