Last Month In Porn

Sorry I missed this when it ran – three women discussing two books on porn over at Slate. Both the books were authored by women, and at least one of the books has a decidedly feminine slant, so I guess it’s understandable that the people discussing it should be women. But it might’ve been interesting to throw a guy into the mix.

Comments

  1. Why throw a guy into the mix? There are enough guys out there already!

  2. Matthew Lickona says

Because guys are, far and away, the majority when it comes to consuming pornography.

A guy reviewing those books would be a no-win situation – he’d either be advocating the repression of women by means of the “raunch culture,” or be standing in the way of women’s sexual liberation….the word “patriarchal” comes to mind.

  4. Notrelatedtoted says

Gah. One of my main frustrations with these sorts of discussions, is that someone always takes the position that essentially boils down to saying: “Look at all these people who use pornography. It’s been going on a long time, and those Bush-voting Christians sure love their porn! Therefore, it can’t really be a problem, can it?”

In this day and age, the problem isn’t so much that pornography exists. It’s the move to legitimize it. In other words, there’s something healthy about wanting to keep your skeletons in the closet.

The tragedy of it all is that those with the most political clout on this issue – the feminists – are reluctant to stem the tide of legitimization, despite how uncomfortable they may be with its effects. Why? Would it be because you might have to admit that there is more to sex than pleasure? That’s my guess.

Really, for a meaningful debate to take place on this issue, you have to offer some explanation of the role of men and women, marriage, sex, conception, etc. etc. The feminists don’t have much to offer on any of those points. The best argument they have is to say that porn objectifies women. But this argument doesn’t seem to be too persuasive to women signing up for cardio striptease 101.

    I’ll stop ranting now.

  5. Matthew Lickona says

    Rant well taken, Not-Ted.

  6. I’d say that both the Left and Right open the pages of porn, digital or analog. Usually when it comes to S&M the woman is in charge. The men like it both ways. Adults abuse themselves and the children. Adults are are all over the Porn map!!!

Healthy adults need to supply healthy objective information to young minds. As soon as possible!
